Hormone imbalances are a lot more common than many people realize. It isn’t limited to just pregnancy and menopause, and shows its face through many symptoms. We often don’t think to turn to food as a remedy, but certain foods can actually help balance them out.
Besides being nutrient-packed and delicious, I especially love this smoothie recipe for those who are trying to improve a hormonal imbalance. Both maca powder and flaxseed are two really great go-tos for this type of issue. They’re also both pretty versatile, so you can add either to all sorts of things.
Maca root powder is an adaptogen, which means it supports your whole endocrine system. Essentially, it helps your endocrine system do its job in less-than-ideal conditions. (To correct a hormonal imbalance entirely, you really need to get to the root cause of the problem.) Its nutty flavor makes it a good complement to almonds and dark chocolate.
Flax seeds contain high amounts of anti-oxidant compounds called lignans. Lignans are plant substances that have a similar, if not as strong impact on the body as our own sex hormones. Plus they have natural hormone balancing qualities. Although found in several legumes, vegetables, and fruits, flaxseed is the richest source of lignans, making it a must for anyone coping with a hormone imbalance. Flax is also a good source of omega-3 fatty acids and fiber.
If you’ve never tried maca or flax, now is your chance! Give this smoothie recipe a shot and let me know what you think!
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons almond butter (no sugar added)
2 tablespoons ground flaxseed
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1.5 cups dairy-free milk
1 serving of protein powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 medjool dates, pitted
Directions:
Add everything to your blender and mix until smooth. Taste and adjust flavors if needed (I recommend limiting additional almond butter given the high fat content.) Enjoy!
