As part of my commitment to helping you improve your health and wellness, I’ve been focusing on herbs that heal this month. It started with my favorite ginger tea recipe ( find it here ), but that’s only the tip of the iceberg. These are some other go-to herbs that I recommend everyone incorporate into their lifestyle.
Peppermint
Toss all those over the counter pain reliever and anti-nausea medications in the trash. Peppermint will get the job done, just without the side effects that pills and liquids at the pharmacy sometimes have. It can improve pain management in IBS by relaxing the muscles in the colon. That relieves discomfort in the bathroom. It also helps to reduce abdominal bloating, which may be a symptom of digestive health issues. If you’re susceptible to frequent headaches, peppermint can help relieve those as well, especially when combined with lavender. It’s also a worthwhile herb if you’re dealing with frequent nausea, including morning sickness. Peppermint can help fight it off.
Garlic
The compound that’s responsible for garlic’s distinctive smell is also responsible for its medicinal effect. Supplementing with garlic can help shorten the duration of a cold or if taken regularly, may even help prevent them all together. Garlic has also been known to lower bad cholesterol and reduce blood pressure. Try chopping up a clove and eating it raw to take advantage of its many health and wellness benefits. (You may just want to brush your teeth afterwards!)
Cinnamon
Its sweet-ish flavor makes cinnamon a really good substitute for bad, refined sugar , but there’s so much more to it. There are lots of options available, but the best type of cinnamon is called ceylon cinnamon (a little pricier, but well worth it.) Cinnamon can fight respiratory tract infections, inhibit growth of certain bacteria, prevent tooth decay, and reduce bad breath. It may even help with more serious diseases, like cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s, plus it’s got an anti-diabetic effect.Natural Nutritionist Brooklyn
